The Federal Ministry of Works says the divider installed during repairs to the First Niger Bridge has not been demolished, explaining that openings were created to allow emergency access and U-turns.
Federal Controller of Works in Anambra Timothy Emenike said the openings would enable the FRSC, fire service and other emergency agencies to carry out their duties on the bridge linking Onitsha and Asaba.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, Emenike rejected reports on social media that the divider had been removed following criticism of the rehabilitation work. His comments were the ministry’s explanation of the changes.
NaijaTrend previously reported how persistent rain delayed the reopening after the September repair closure here.
He said major work, including road surfacing and the fixing of expansion bolts, had been completed. Painting of the railings and work on bolts for lighting poles were continuing.
Emenike said the bridge could reopen before the end of the week if no unforeseen problems arose. He did not announce that it had already reopened or give a firm reopening date.
