FCT confirms two deaths, five cases in diphtheria outbreak

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has confirmed two deaths from a diphtheria outbreak after five laboratory-confirmed cases were recorded in the nation’s capital.

FCT health officials said 15 suspected cases had been investigated, with five testing positive. Several patients have been treated and discharged, while response teams have focused sensitisation and vaccination work in Karshi.

Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary for Health Services and Environment, said the administration had activated containment measures and urged residents to support vaccination and early reporting of symptoms.

Premium Times reported that the FCT response is targeting unvaccinated children in Karshi. Vanguard reported concern from ActionAid over the deaths of two children and called for stronger public health action.

Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that can affect the nose and throat and can spread quickly where vaccination coverage is weak. Health officials are urging parents and caregivers to ensure children receive routine immunisation.
