Police in Enugu State have detained a 30-year-old man after the alleged killing of his girlfriend following an argument linked to HIV infection.

The state police command said the woman, identified in reports as Chinyere, died after she was allegedly struck on the head with a pestle during the argument. The suspect was later rescued from a mob and re-arrested by officers from the Awkunanaw Division.

Police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe said the incident happened in the Olympic Layout area of Enugu. Daily Trust reported the suspect as Emmanuel Okpara, while Vanguard and Premium Times identified him as Chibuike Okpara. All three reports matched on the alleged argument, the fatal blow and the police investigation.

The command said the suspect allegedly wrapped and dumped the woman’s remains inside a toilet after her death. The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, ordered a full investigation and directed officers to handle the case thoroughly.

The allegation has not been tested in court. Police said the suspect remains in custody while investigators work to establish the full circumstances of the woman’s death.
