Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu is set to resign from President Tinubu’s cabinet to pursue the Oyo State governorship in 2027.

Adelabu’s spokesperson, Tunji Bolaji, confirmed the development on Tuesday, saying the minister has secured Tinubu’s approval to resign and contest the governorship.

“Chief Adebayo Adelabu has the full support of Mr President to contest for the position of Governor of Oyo State,” the statement read.

Why Now

The resignation comes after Adelabu presented a comprehensive report on his stewardship at the Power Ministry over the past two and a half years. Bolaji said the timing reflects Adelabu’s commitment to addressing sectoral challenges and ensuring continuity in ongoing reforms before exiting.

This includes efforts to stabilize the sector following recent declines in power generation caused by gas supply constraints, ongoing pipeline repairs, and outstanding obligations to gas suppliers.

Oyo Political Landscape

Adelabu, a former Central Bank deputy governor who was appointed Power Minister in August 2023, brings significant financial and political experience to the governorship race. His entry reshapes the dynamics in Oyo State, where the APC is pushing to reclaim power.

He becomes the first cabinet member to exit ahead of the 2027 election cycle — a sign that political maneuvering for the next cycle is already underway.
