Police rescue abducted Methodist cleric in Ebonyi, arrest suspected cultist
Police in Ebonyi State have rescued Rev. Ede Sunday, a Methodist Church cleric abducted in Ohaukwu Local Government Area, and announced a separate arrest linked to suspected cult activity.
The command said it received a distress call at about 11:55 p.m. on September 9, 2026, after the cleric was abducted in front of the church premises at Ndulo Amofia by two armed men.
Police spokesperson Joshua Ukandu said operatives moved in after the report and rescued the cleric. The command also said it recovered illegal firearms and stolen property while disrupting a suspected cult gathering.
The incidents add to security concerns in parts of Ebonyi, where churches and rural communities have faced periodic attacks and abductions. Police said investigations were continuing and urged residents to report suspicious movement promptly.
The command did not announce a prosecution date for the suspect named in the reports.
