Nigerian Army Opens Probe Into Sexual Abuse Allegation Against Officer
The Nigerian Army has opened an investigation into a sexual abuse allegation involving Captain Etim Essien, a serving officer at Headquarters 3 Division in Jos, Plateau State.
The division said the allegation was being handled through a formal inquiry and warned the public against speculation while the facts are still being established.
Olumide Olukoya, the acting deputy director of Army Public Relations at 3 Division, said the Army was aware of reports about the officer and had begun steps to establish what happened. The statement said allegations involving minors and other vulnerable persons were treated seriously.
The Army said it would cooperate with civil authorities also looking into the matter. It added that it would not make final comments on any person’s culpability while the investigation is still ongoing.
The statement also asked members of the public not to circulate unverified information that could affect the inquiry or compromise the privacy and wellbeing of those involved, especially any minor.
It said further information would be released only in line with legal requirements and the need to protect the integrity of the process.
