Ondo Investigates Suspected Poisoning After 24 Deaths

Ondo State authorities are investigating the deaths of 24 people in Odigbo Local Government Area after residents reportedly consumed herbal or locally brewed drinks.

The deaths were reported in Odigbo town and Araromi-Obu after an incident said to have occurred over the weekend. Punch reported that eight people died in Araromi-Obu and 16 in Odigbo town, while others were receiving treatment in hospitals.

Odigbo council chairman Taiwo Adegoroye confirmed the 24 deaths but said officials were waiting for medical tests before naming the actual cause. He said the victims had consumed the substance before falling ill.

Daily Post reported that Ondo Health Commissioner Dr Banji Ajaka said investigations were ongoing. Permanent Secretary Dr Ayodele Adeji said early findings pointed to possible methanol contamination, but laboratory analysis was still needed.

The local government has imposed an immediate ban on the sale and consumption of locally produced alcoholic beverages while health officials continue checks in the affected communities.
