IGP Disu Restructures Police Monitoring Unit, Redeploys 56 Officers
Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has ordered a comprehensive restructuring of the Nigeria Police Force Monitoring Unit, marking the second major overhaul of the internal oversight body in recent years.
The reorganization, announced Monday by police spokesperson Anthony Placid, is designed to refocus the unit on its core mandate of strengthening internal accountability and operational efficiency across commands nationwide.
As part of the changes, DCP Aliyu Abubakar has been appointed to head the newly reformed unit. Abubakar previously served at the State Criminal Investigation Department in both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State, where he handled several high-profile investigations.
56 Officers Redeployed
An internal memo dated April 11, 2026, signed by Bode Akinbamilowo on behalf of the IGP, shows that 56 Supernumerary Police Officers were demobilized from the Police Monitoring Unit and reassigned to commands across the country.
The affected officers, ranging from Chief Superintendents to Assistant Superintendents, have been posted to formations including Lagos, Rivers, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, and Benue states. The IGP warned that any officer attempting to lobby for favorable postings would face severe disciplinary action.
Replacing SARS Veteran
Abubakar replaces DCP Akin Fakorede, who headed the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Rivers State between 2015 and 2017. Police described the new appointee as a seasoned, community-oriented officer known for promoting professionalism and transparency in policing.
The Monitoring Unit will now focus on proactive monitoring, intelligence-led inspections, and real-time oversight of police personnel and operations across all commands, formations, and departments.
This restructuring follows similar reforms initiated by former IGP Kayode Egbetokun in August 2023, which aimed to foster accountability and maintain public trust in the police force.
