Suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP fighters attacked the convoy of Borno APC governorship candidate Mustapha Gubio on the Kareto-Damasak Road, but police said nobody in the entourage was killed.

The attack happened on Thursday as Gubio and his team travelled around northern Borno after a visit to Damasak. Security operatives travelling with the convoy repelled the attackers and the convoy later continued its journey.

Police in Borno said the convoy was attacked around 2:30pm by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP fighters. Force spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin also said police tactical operatives countered an attack involving an explosive device and rocket-propelled grenades.

Daily Trust reported that a police armoured vehicle leading the convoy ran over a planted explosive device before the attackers tried to ambush the convoy. It said soldiers, police officers and Civilian Joint Task Force members engaged the attackers and prevented further damage.

The report comes as Borno continues to face attacks on highways and communities despite military operations in the North East.
