EFCC Sacks Over 40 Staff, Says More Than Five Former Officers Face Trial

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission says more than 40 of its personnel have been dismissed over alleged corruption and financial malpractice in the past two and a half to three years.

EFCC chairman Ola Olukoyede also said more than five former staff members are currently being prosecuted, while files involving others are being prepared for possible trial.

Olukoyede gave the figures during a briefing at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, where he said the anti-graft agency must hold its own officers to the same standards it applies to people it investigates.

Olukoyede said officers implicated in corruption would not be shielded from prosecution, while the commission was strengthening internal checks through its Department of Ethics and Integrity.

The EFCC chairman said the agency has introduced a gift policy for personnel. Under the policy, staff are expected to declare gifts above a set value and account for items that could raise questions about their income or official conduct.
