Otti Opens 80-Bed Obingwa Hospital Named After Chima Ubani

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has opened the remodelled 80-bed Obingwa General Hospital in Mgboko and named it after the late rights activist Chima Ubani.

The hospital, located in the headquarters of Obingwa Local Government Area, was commissioned on Tuesday. The state government said the facility has been digitally equipped as part of its plan to improve public healthcare and rebuild confidence in government hospitals.

Otti said the project was aimed at expanding access to medical care for residents of Obingwa and neighbouring communities, including parts of Aba and Osisioma. He said the administration was paying particular attention to services for mothers and newborns, where delays and poor facilities can quickly become fatal.

The governor said the hospital’s new features include a healing garden, digital data management, inter-facility collaboration tools, ambulance links and accommodation for health workers. He said the facility would also support referrals across nearby communities.

The state named the hospital after Chima Ubani, an Obingwa-born activist remembered for his pro-democracy work and civil society advocacy. Otti said the choice was meant to honour Ubani’s commitment to justice and ordinary Nigerians.

Officials at the event said the hospital was part of wider work to strengthen Abia’s public health system. The government has presented the project as one of its flagship health investments, while residents will judge it by staffing, equipment and the quality of care after the ceremony.
