83 Nigerians Arrive In Lagos From South Africa

A new batch of 83 Nigerians has arrived in Lagos from South Africa after attacks and rising hostility against migrants in that country.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the returnees landed at Murtala Muhammed International Airport on a South African Airways flight from Johannesburg. The ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, announced the arrival in a statement on Wednesday night.

The latest arrival follows an earlier plan to bring the same number of Nigerians home, reported by NaijaTrend here. The new report confirms that the group has now reached Lagos.

Ebienfa said two officials from Nigeria’s Consulate-General in Johannesburg accompanied the returnees. He also said private individuals paid for the flight tickets that made the return possible.

On arrival, the returnees were received by Ambassador Haruna Ali-Gombe, Director of the African Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, before being handed over to relevant agencies for documentation and profiling ahead of reunion with their families.
