LAWMA, Police Move Against Illegal Waste Dumping In Lagos

The Lagos Waste Management Authority and the Lagos State Police Command have agreed to work more closely against illegal waste dumping, dumpsite encroachment and attacks on waste workers.

The agreement followed a courtesy visit by LAWMA’s Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, at the police command in GRA, Ikeja.

Gbadegesin asked for stronger police support for LAWMA’s enforcement and operational work, especially in areas affected by indiscriminate dumping and other environmental offences. He said Lagos’ growing population had increased pressure on waste management infrastructure across the state.

He also raised concern about resistance faced by LAWMA personnel, including enforcement officers and street sweepers, while clearing illegally dumped waste. He called for better security around LAWMA facilities, work sites and places prone to illegal activity.

Fatai said the police command would support enforcement against illegal dumping, unauthorised occupation and encroachment at dumpsites. He also pledged police support in cases involving attacks on LAWMA workers and facilities.
