The Anambra State Police Command says its operatives killed two suspected kidnappers during a gun duel at Eziowele in Idemili North Local Government Area.

The command said the operation also led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, a pump-action gun, ammunition and cartridges from the scene.

Punch reported that the operatives were attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, and moved into the area after sighting the suspects along Ezeowelle Road.

Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga said the suspects opened fire after seeing the police team, leading to an exchange that lasted several minutes.

According to the police account reported by both Punch and Vanguard, two suspects sustained fatal gunshot injuries, while other members of the group fled with gunshot wounds.

The recovered items were listed as one AK-47 rifle with a magazine containing four live rounds, one pump-action gun and five live cartridges.

The command said it had begun further investigation and intensified efforts to track down the fleeing members of the gang. It also said the operation was part of wider intelligence-led actions against criminal groups in the state.
