Benue Attack Hits Ukum Communities As Residents Report Deaths, Injuries
Fresh violence has hit communities in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, with residents and officials reporting deaths, injuries and a security response after an early morning attack on Sunday.
The affected areas include Mbaterem and communities in Mbazun Ward. Punch named Ayaba, Ikpur, Yina, Aboajio and Ukpen among the places attacked, while Daily Post reported that attackers rode into the area on motorcycles and forced residents to flee into nearby bushes.
Casualty details are still being assessed. Daily Post quoted a resident as saying four people had been confirmed dead in Aboajio alone, with searches continuing for missing residents. Ukum council chairman Jonathan Modi confirmed that an attack occurred but said security operatives were still assessing the number of casualties.
Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the attack and praised security agencies for what he called their prompt response. His statement said the attackers killed some residents and injured others, but it did not give a final casualty figure.
The Benue State Police Command also confirmed an attack in Ukum. Police spokesperson Orchia Aondogwu said more details would be released after security teams completed their assessment.
The report comes amid recurring attacks on Benue communities, where casualty figures often change as residents, local officials and security agencies reconcile field accounts.
