Police Probe Rivers Varsity Cult Clash After Gunshots On Campus
Police in Rivers State say they have restored calm at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education after gunshots were reported during a clash between rival cult groups on the campus.
The incident happened around the university community in Rumuolumeni, near Port Harcourt, during activities linked to students’ union week. Students were said to have run for safety as shots were heard.
Daily Trust and Vanguard both reported that the clash involved rival groups identified in the accounts as Vikings and KK/Clansmen groups. The reports said no life was lost, although the incident disrupted activity on campus and renewed concern over recurring cult-related violence at the institution.
Rivers police spokesperson Blessing Agabe said officers responded to the distress call, brought the situation under control and did not fire the shots heard during the clash. She said an investigation was under way to identify and arrest those involved.
A rights advocate, Prince Wiro, also raised concern about repeated clashes at the university and urged the authorities to strengthen security around the campus.
