Troops Repel ISWAP Attack On Borno Military Base
Troops in Borno State have repelled an ISWAP attack on a military base in Gajiram, Nganzai Local Government Area, after insurgents tried to overrun the position shortly after midnight on Monday.
The report concerns a ground assault on a Forward Operating Base in Gajiram and the troops’ response.
Daily Post reported the military’s statement through Captain Mohammed Goni, acting information officer for Operation Hadin Kai. The statement said the attack began at about 12:20am on August 10 and that troops responded with sustained fire until the attackers withdrew.
The report said some soldiers were injured after part of the defensive position was temporarily breached. It also said some combat enablers and military vehicles were damaged by rocket-propelled grenade fire.
Premium Times reported the same midnight attack, citing soldiers’ accounts, but said the Nigerian Army had not separately confirmed the casualty claims at the time of its report. Neither report supports a fixed number of insurgents or soldiers killed.
The reports both place the incident in Gajiram and describe it as an attempt by Boko Haram or ISWAP fighters to storm the base.
