Assistant Superintendent of Police Bala Wakili has been killed during a gun battle with suspected bandits in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The officer was attached to the Kebbe Police Division. The reports said the attackers invaded Girkau and Zugu villages on Monday and rustled livestock before a joint security team confronted them.

Daily Trust reported that police officers, soldiers and members of the Sokoto Community Guard Corps mounted an ambush as the attackers left Zugu village. The gun battle reportedly lasted for more than one hour.

The attackers later overpowered the team, killed Wakili and burnt two patrol vehicles, one belonging to the police and the other to the Sokoto Community Guard Corps.

Sokoto police spokesperson Ahmad Rufa’i confirmed that a police officer died in the line of duty and said additional security personnel had been deployed to the area.
