FG Orders Tertiary Institutions To Expel Students Linked To Kidnapping

The Federal Government has directed tertiary institutions to dismiss any student found culpable, after due investigation, of involvement in kidnapping or related violent crimes.

Education Minister Tunji Alausa gave the order on Tuesday during a meeting with the Governing Council and management of the Federal University of Lafia, Nasarawa State.

The directive applies to vice-chancellors, rectors and provosts of universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. It follows concerns raised over the alleged involvement of some students in off-campus kidnapping activities.

Alausa also asked heads of institutions to strengthen internal intelligence gathering and work more closely with the Department of State Services and other security agencies to protect students on and off campus.

Daily Trust reported that the meeting was led by the university’s Pro-Chancellor, Lola Fibisola Akande. Punch said the discussion also covered campus security, infrastructure, student welfare and the government’s wider higher education reforms.

The minister said campuses remained largely safe, but recent incidents involving students outside campuses required stronger monitoring and faster cooperation with security agencies.
