Taraba Governor Signs Orders On Thuggery, Drug Abuse And Illegal Mining
Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has signed three executive orders aimed at political thuggery, drug abuse and illegal exploitation of natural resources in the state.
The measures were announced after the orders were signed over the weekend. Punch and Daily Post both reported that the state government framed the orders as part of a wider push to tighten public safety, protect communities and reduce activities linked to violence and environmental damage.
One order strengthens action against drug abuse and gives relevant authorities backing to prevent, monitor and prosecute offences linked to illicit drugs and controlled substances. The government also said it would support public enlightenment, rehabilitation and youth-development efforts.
The second order bans the recruitment, sponsorship, financing, harbouring or use of political thugs. Kefas said the step was tied to the need to protect public order as political campaigns approach.
The third order targets illegal miners, loggers and other unauthorised operators. The reports said the governor linked those activities to environmental degradation, damage to farms and water sources, and risks to host communities.
The state government asked citizens, traditional institutions, religious leaders, youth groups, political stakeholders and civil society organisations to support the implementation of the orders.
