US Mission Warns Nigerians Against AI-Edited Passport Photos

The United States Mission in Nigeria has warned visa applicants not to submit passport photographs altered with artificial intelligence or other digital editing tools.

The advisory said edited or filtered photographs would not be accepted and could delay applications. It told applicants to use recent photos that clearly look like them.

The mission said a passport photo should have been taken within the last six months and should allow border or airport officers to identify the applicant without doubt.

Punch and Vanguard reported that the warning was shared through the mission’s official X account and repeated in an accompanying flier on passport-photo rules.

The notice told applicants not to use AI tools, filters or digital retouching that changes how they look. It also directed them to the US State Department’s photo-requirements page before submitting applications.

The warning matters for Nigerians seeking US visas because photograph checks are part of identity verification. A picture that looks polished but does not match the applicant’s current appearance can slow down the process.

The mission’s message also fits wider concerns about AI-manipulated images in official documents, where a small edit can create problems for facial-recognition and human identity checks.
