CJN Stops Lawyers From Using Barrister Prefix At Supreme Court

Chief Justice of Nigeria Kudirat Kekere-Ekun has directed lawyers and court officials to stop using the title "Barrister" before their names in official dealings with the Supreme Court.
The order took immediate effect and applies to litigation staff, legal practitioners, court registrars and lawyers doing official business with the apex court.
The directive was contained in a July 13, 2026 memorandum signed by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Kabir Akanbi. The memo said the title was inappropriate for Supreme Court records and inconsistent with the professional standard expected within the court.
Punch reported that the memo instructed affected officers to stop using the prefix in all documents, processes and official communication before the court.
Daily Post and Daily Trust also reported the directive on Friday, describing it as part of an effort to standardise official documentation at the Supreme Court.
