Niger State has opened an investigation into a suspected infectious disease after reports that an illness killed a child and affected other members of the same family.

The state government also urged parents to complete their children’s routine immunisation and asked residents to remain calm while health officials assess the case.

Yunusa Saidu, Director of Information Services at the Ministry of Information and Orientation, said the Ministry of Health moved in after a concerned father shared videos on social media alleging that a strange illness had affected his household.

The government said health officials were working to establish what happened and to determine whether wider public health action was needed.

Officials said parents should use available immunisation services and report unusual symptoms early instead of waiting until an illness becomes severe.

The state said updates would be provided as the investigation continues.
