FG Sets New Reintegration Plan As Group Demands Trial For Terror Suspects
The Federal Government has introduced a new framework for reintegrating former terrorists and other people linked to armed violence, even as a Nigerian Christian group in the United States warned that terror suspects should not be returned to society without trial.
The plan was announced in Abuja at a validation workshop on standard procedures for disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration at the federal level and in pilot states.
The National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre, Maj. Gen. Adamu Laka, said the framework would cover the federal level and pilot work in Kaduna, Katsina and Zamfara.
A separate Vanguard report said the Christian Association of Nigerian Americans asked the government to stop reintegrating suspected terrorists without first taking them through the courts.
The group said people accused of terrorism should face Nigeria’s judicial process before any reintegration decision is made.
The issue is sensitive because reintegration programmes sit between security, justice and community healing. The new framework sets out a government process, while the group’s warning reflects continuing public concern over accountability for violent crimes.
