Police Demote Two Officers Over POS Extortion In Delta
The Delta State Police Command has demoted two officers after they were found guilty of extorting a motorist through a POS terminal inside a police station.
The affected officers are an inspector and a corporal, according to reports on the disciplinary action.
Premium Times reported that the decision followed a finding that the officers used a POS terminal to extort a motorist, despite the Inspector-General of Police’s ban on electronic payments in police formations.
Punch also reported that the officers were caught in connection with POS extortion in Delta, while Guardian said the case was linked to a viral video.
The disciplinary action comes amid repeated warnings from police authorities against extortion, illegal detention, unauthorised payments and other forms of misconduct by officers.
The Inspector-General’s ban on electronic payments in police stations was introduced to reduce opportunities for officers to demand or process unlawful payments from members of the public.
The Delta case is expected to add pressure on police commands to enforce internal discipline and ensure complaints against officers are investigated quickly.
