Ojoo area after the Ibadan violence

The Oyo State Government has promised arrests and prosecution after a violent clash in the Ojoo area of Ibadan left people dead and several others injured.

The violence followed the killing of a commercial tricycle rider during a dispute linked to a Point-of-Sale transaction. Traders shut businesses in the area as tension spread from Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

There was a difference in the casualty figures reported by the two outlets. Punch reported that the state government confirmed four deaths, while Channels TV reported that the government confirmed two deaths. Both reports said Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal visited the area on behalf of Governor Seyi Makinde and appealed for calm.

Lawal warned residents not to give the violence an ethnic or tribal colouration. He said security agencies had been directed to keep a strong presence in the area and investigate those behind the unrest.

The government said it would not tolerate disorder capable of disrupting peace in the state.
