DSS Frees Nura Idris, Pays N3m After Wrongful Boko Haram-Link Arrest
The Department of State Services has freed Nura Idris after an internal review cleared him of alleged links to Boko Haram.
Vanguard reported that DSS Director-General Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi ordered Idris’ release and approved N3 million compensation for him. Punch also reported that the DSS paid Idris N3 million after a review found no evidence against him.
According to Vanguard, Idris is a farmer and livestock rearer from Soba Local Government Area of Kaduna State. He was arrested by another security agency in Suleja, Niger State, in June 2024 over alleged terrorist links before he was transferred to DSS custody.
The DSS review panel later found no evidence to support the allegation, leading Ajayi to order his immediate release.
The service also pledged support to help Idris rebuild his business after his detention.
Vanguard quoted Idris as thanking the DSS leadership after receiving the compensation, saying the money would help him restart his life.
The report said Idris’ father, Yusuf Idris, also thanked the DSS Director-General and promised that the compensation would be put to good use.
The release is part of a wider DSS review of inherited and prolonged detention cases. Vanguard reported that the service has reviewed more than 30 cases and paid more than N300 million in compensation to affected detainees.
The same report cited earlier cases, including Sunday Ifedi and his wife, Calista, who were detained at Wawa facility before Ajayi’s appointment and later cleared after a review.
