Lassa fever outbreak in Nigeria

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has reported 214 deaths from Lassa fever across the country in 2026, with the case fatality rate rising to 25 per cent.

Daily Post reported that the NCDC released the figures in a situation report on June 22, showing that one in four confirmed cases had been fatal.

The agency said the death rate was higher than in the same period in previous years. It attributed the rising fatalities to delayed presentation at hospitals, poor health-seeking behaviour and challenges in managing severe cases.

The NCDC advised Nigerians to maintain proper hygiene, avoid contact with rodents and seek prompt medical attention if symptoms appear.
