30 Witnesses To Testify Against Suspected Nigerian Coup Plotters
The Federal Government has lined up 30 prosecution witnesses to testify against six suspects standing trial over an alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Premium Times reported exclusively that the suspects include a retired Major General, Mohammed Gana; a retired Navy Captain, Erasmus Victor; a Police Inspector, Ahmed Ibrahim; and three others, Zekeri Umoru, Bukar Goni and Abdulkadir Sani.
The charges border on treason, terrorism financing, failure to disclose information and money laundering. The prosecution alleged that the defendants conspired with Colonel Mohammed Ma’aji and others now at large to wage war against Nigeria and unlawfully remove President Tinubu from office.
The 30 witnesses include investigating officers, senior military officers, bank officials from 13 financial institutions, forensic experts, hotel representatives and civilian witnesses. The Proof of Evidence, exclusively obtained by Premium Times, shows the prosecution intends to rely on documentary exhibits, financial records, and forensic analysis of electronic devices recovered during the investigation.
Last year, Premium Times published the names of more than 40 officers and civilians allegedly involved in the plot. The government later filed 13-count charges against the civilians and ex-military officers, while serving officers are being court-martialed.
