Bomb Explosion Hits Lagos Shoe Materials Market, One Injured — Police
An explosion suspected to have been caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) occurred at the Shoe Materials Market in Mushin, Lagos, on Monday, June 22, 2026, injuring one person who was rushed to hospital and is in stable condition.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Mr Fatai Tijani, confirmed the incident while addressing journalists at the scene. He said police received reports of the explosion and immediately deployed Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) operatives to cordon off and secure the area.
Punch quoted a police statement as saying EOD-CBRN operatives were immediately deployed after a distress call, cordoned off the area and declared it safe after a search and recovery operation.
According to the police commissioner, preliminary findings indicated the explosion was caused by an IED planted beneath the passenger side of a vehicle. The device detonated when the vehicle’s engine was started.
“The IED was under the vehicle by the passenger side. It exploded when the vehicle was started,” Tijani stated.
One person sustained injuries in the incident and was taken to hospital for treatment. The victim is in stable condition, the police said.
After a detailed sweep by EOD experts, no additional explosive devices were discovered in the area. The police commissioner urged residents and traders to remain calm and resume normal activities.
The Lagos State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the incident.
