Youths Set Ekiti Police Station Ablaze After Community Member’s Death
Youths set the Isan-Ekiti police station ablaze on Friday night in protest after a community member was allegedly killed by police officers, hours before the Saturday governorship election in Ekiti State.
Daily Post reported that a viral video showed angry youths storming the police facility and setting it on fire, with the lifeless body of a young man visible in a pool of blood in one of the clips.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Ekiti State Command, SP Abutu Sunday, said he would revert when contacted by Daily Post. Asked what triggered the violence, the PPRO said: “you have to hold on, I will get back to you.”
Premium Times separately reported that two police officers were injured in the attack and that the police had classified the Isan-Ekiti violence as not linked to the Ekiti governorship election.
The incident has sparked security concerns ahead of the gubernatorial polls, with voting commencing across the state’s 16 local government areas on Saturday morning.
