Opposition Reps Tell Tinubu To Suspend 2027 Politics, Tackle Insecurity
The Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives has asked President Bola Tinubu to put 2027 politics aside and focus on Nigeria’s worsening security and economic pressures.
Minority Leader Fred Agbedi, who spoke for the caucus at the National Assembly in Abuja, said the administration should declare a six-month National Security and Economic Recovery Plan instead of allowing early election calculations to dominate governance.
Agbedi accused the government of placing political manoeuvring above the lives and welfare of Nigerians. Punch quoted him as saying, “Nigeria is bleeding, Nigeria is confused and Nigeria is being deliberately pushed to the brink by a government that has elevated 2027 electioneering above the lives and welfare of citizens.”
The caucus called for an overhaul of the security architecture, urgent action on abductions and clearer accountability over recent high-profile security failures. The lawmakers also demanded renewed attention to hardship, saying insecurity and economic pain had become central concerns for households across the country.
The Guardian reported that Agbedi urged Tinubu to “suspend all 2027 political activities and declare a six-month National Security and Economic Recovery Plan,” adding the phrase, “Lead or leave.”
Daily Trust also reported that the lawmakers linked their warning to the abduction and reported death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, describing the episode as an indictment of the state of national security. The caucus said the safety of ordinary citizens could not be treated as a secondary issue while politicians prepare for the next election cycle.
The criticism adds to growing pressure on the federal government over kidnappings, armed attacks and the rising cost of living. The lawmakers said governance should take priority over political positioning until the security and hardship crises are brought under control.
