The first batch of 262 Nigerians evacuated from South Africa arrived in Lagos on Thursday, June 11, 2026, after the federal government moved to bring home citizens caught up in the latest wave of anti-immigration violence there.
The flight carried 262 passengers and three officials, according to Channels Television and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. AP also reported that the repatriation is part of a wider effort to protect Nigerians whose safety is at risk in South Africa.
Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu said reception and support arrangements had been put in place at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, where officials were on hand to receive the returnees.
The evacuation is a fresh development in the broader Nigeria-South Africa tension, following earlier government warnings, screenings and plans to repatriate citizens who wanted to return home.
