Cholera Outbreak Kills 74, Infects Nearly 8,000 in Borno State
A cholera outbreak in Borno State has claimed at least 74 lives and infected nearly 8,000 people, according to reports from Médecins Sans Frontières and local health authorities.
Premium Times reported that the outbreak is overwhelming health facilities across the Northeast, where limited access to clean water and damaged healthcare infrastructure have worsened the spread. Leadership also carried the story, citing MSF figures showing over 7,800 infections.
The latest figures mark a significant jump from earlier reports. The published index shows a June 2 alert with 39 deaths and 4,204 cases. The new toll of 74 deaths and approximately 7,850 infections indicates the outbreak has worsened considerably in the past week.
Borno State has been at the centre of a long-running Boko Haram insurgency that has destroyed many health centres and displaced millions. The cholera outbreak adds to the humanitarian strain, with treatment centres struggling to cope with the surge in patients.
Oral rehydration centres have been set up, but MSF and other humanitarian groups have warned that bed shortages and limited water supply remain critical challenges.
