Veteran Actor Patrick Doyle Loses Newborn Daughter Just Hours After Birth
It was supposed to be a weekend of celebration for veteran Nollywood actor Patrick Doyle and his wife, Funmilayo. Instead, it turned into heartbreak.
Doyle announced the death of his newborn daughter, Omayinuwa Mayen Harriet Doyle, who passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2026, just hours after her birth the previous day.
In a social media post, the actor wrote: “Omayinuwa visited us briefly at about 10:40 am on Friday, April 10, and returned to heaven on Saturday, April 11, at about 4:15 pm. Her stay was short, but it brought great joy. We would have wished for a longer stay, but heaven thought otherwise. Sibe, Sibe Oluwa n’be. It is well with our soul.”
From joy to grief in 30 hours
Just a day earlier, Doyle had shared the happy news on Facebook: “To the glory of God, I announce the precious addition of a female child to my quiver. OMAYINUWA MAYEN HARRIET DOYLE was born yesterday at about 10:40 am. Mother and child are doing well, and daddy is overwhelmed with joy and gratitude to God Almighty.”
Congratulatory messages poured in from fans and colleagues across Nollywood. Then came the second post, and the mood shifted completely.
The baby lived for roughly 30 hours. The cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.
Colleagues and fans rally round
Colleagues and fans have flooded Doyle’s social media pages with condolences, many borrowing the Yoruba phrase he used, “Sibe, Sibe Oluwa n’be” (Nevertheless, the Lord is there), to share their own prayers.
Doyle, a veteran broadcaster and actor with decades in Nollywood, is known for his reflective public presence. Even in grief, his words had a quiet grace that connected with Nigerians who have been through similar losses.
A pain many Nigerian families know
Celebrity stories often dominate entertainment headlines, but this one lands differently. Nigeria has one of the highest neonatal mortality rates in the world, with an estimated 34 deaths per 1,000 live births according to UNICEF. For many families, what the Doyles are going through is painfully familiar.
As condolences keep coming in, the family has asked for privacy.
