Police in Ogun State have arrested a man known as General Don on suspicion of impersonating military personnel in Abeokuta, the state capital.

Ogun State Police Command spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi announced the arrest in a Thursday statement, saying the suspect, Akinola Damilare, was detained at about 2am on Tuesday.

Operatives of the command’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit arrested Damilare in the Kajola, Elega area after receiving information from a community leader and placing him under surveillance, police said.

The command said officers recovered a military face cap, a pair of three-quarter military trousers and four photographs showing the suspect in uniform.

Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni urged residents to report suspicious conduct. The account released by the command concerns an allegation of impersonation, not a court finding.

Babaseyi said investigators were examining the circumstances of the alleged impersonation and whether other people were connected to the case.
