Electricity consumers across Nigeria face shorter supply hours because gas shortages and reduced water inflows have limited power generation, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) said on Thursday.
In a statement issued by its management, NISO said both thermal and hydroelectric stations were producing less electricity because of the constraints.
That leaves distribution companies with less power to deliver to homes and businesses. The operator said the shortfall had increased load shedding, with the effects differing between networks according to their allocations.
At gas-fired stations, insufficient fuel is preventing plants from using their available generating capacity. Hydroelectric stations face a separate constraint: less water entering the reservoirs that supply them.
NISO said it was managing the electricity available to keep the grid stable while working to diversify the sources of power feeding the network.
The statement did not give a recovery date, identify the affected generating stations or set out supply schedules for individual distribution companies.
