Police are investigating an alleged attack on ADC governorship candidate Manir Muhammad Dan’iya’s convoy near Sokoto Airport on Friday night, as APC denies the opposition’s account.
Sokoto police spokesperson Ahmed Rufai told Punch in a text message that the command was aware of the incident and was investigating.
Dan’iya alleged that Sokoto Marshal and Community Guard personnel blocked his convoy, fired shots, damaged his vehicle and detained two DSS officers assigned to protect him.
His media aide, Aminu Abdullahi, said in a statement that the confrontation happened at about 9pm, after Dan’iya escorted former Sokoto governor Aminu Tambuwal to the airport.
State APC chairman Haruna Adiya rejected the allegations. He told Punch that security deployments were preparations for a traditional title conferment ceremony on Sunday, not an attempt to obstruct ADC activities.
Adiya also disputed the claim that state security personnel had detained DSS officers and questioned the consistency of the candidate’s account.
Dan’iya called for an investigation by police and the DSS and asked that evidence be preserved. Police have not announced findings establishing who was responsible for the alleged confrontation.
