Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum says NNPC has agreed to resume oil exploration in the state following talks with the company’s leadership in Maiduguri on Wednesday.
Zulum announced the commitment during a meeting with a delegation led by NNPC board chairman Ahmadu Musa Kida at Government House.
The talks covered exploration in the Borno Basin and the unfinished upgrade of the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant, which is intended to improve electricity supply to the city and surrounding communities.
Zulum said materials needed for the upgrade had been on site for about two years, but the work remained incomplete. He asked the company’s management to intervene.
Kida said NNPC was ready to speed up the resumption of exploration and address the problems delaying the power project.
The delegation included executives responsible for upstream operations and for gas, power and new energy. Borno Deputy Governor Umar Usman Kadafur and Secretary to the State Government Bukar Tijani also attended.
The reports did not specify a date for exploration to restart or for the power-plant upgrade to be completed.
