Police in Ondo State say they have arrested 14 people after a mob attacked a station in Ala, Akure North Local Government Area, while trying to seize two suspects.

Command spokesperson Abayomi Jimoh said on Wednesday that officers rescued the pair, who were suspected of involvement in a farmer’s killing, after a crowd demanded they be handed over.

Two officers were injured when the patrol team taking the suspects towards Akure came under attack. Jimoh said they received treatment at a nearby hospital.

The farmer’s death was reported on 24 October from General Camp in the Government Reserve area. Police said an investigation began after officers visited the scene.

Jimoh said the community’s youth president apprehended two suspects on Monday and sought refuge with them at the Ala Divisional Police Headquarters when a crowd tried to seize them.

The crowd pursued them to the station and threw stones and other objects, according to the police account. Rescue teams removed the two suspects at about 1.45am on Tuesday.

Police said the 14 arrests concerned the attack on officers, the station and the rescue team. Investigators were still establishing the individual roles of those arrested, while tactical personnel remained deployed in the area.
