Five people, including four students, have died in a head-on crash between a van in the convoy of Niger Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago and a private car in Minna.
Vanguard and Premium Times reported that the collision happened at Gidan Mangoro community along the Minna–Bida Road. Leadership said the crash occurred on Monday at about 11.35am, when a Hilux van in the governor’s convoy rammed a Peugeot 206 car head-on.
The Federal Road Safety Corps sector commander in Niger State, Aishat Sa’adu, confirmed the crash and said officers arrived at the scene after the victims had been evacuated to hospital, according to Leadership.
The reports differ on the victims: Premium Times said those killed were four students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, and a driver attached to the Niger State Government House, while Vanguard’s account said the dead were four male students and a young woman. Leadership identified the woman as Mrs Nafisa, an NGO programme manager who was driving the Peugeot, and reported that a Minna General Hospital staff member said three people died at the scene and two others later died.
Leadership also reported that some of the injured were referred to IBB Specialist Hospital in Minna for advanced care, and that the convoy had been returning from a condolence visit at the palace of the Etsu Nupe in Bida.
According to the reports, the Police Public Relations Officer in Niger State, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident and said the state police command’s investigation was ongoing.
