Police in Ebonyi State say they have charged a man to court after arresting him on suspicion of impersonating a lawyer for more than a decade.
State police spokesperson Joshua Ukandu announced the case in a statement issued in Abakaliki on Tuesday, saying officers investigated a petition alleging that the suspect obtained money under false pretences.
The petitioner alleged that the man collected N650,000 in March to process a street-naming application in Ohaozara Local Government Area, presenting himself as an experienced lawyer.
Ukandu said investigators found that the suspect lacked the professional qualifications to practise law. Police also alleged that he admitted during questioning that he was not a lawyer.
A search of his home produced a Nigerian Bar Association seal, a robe and wig, and purported law degree certificates bearing the name of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, according to the statement.
Police said they also recovered court judgements and legal documents, including powers of attorney and deeds of conveyance. These are police allegations, not a finding of guilt.
The reports did not specify a hearing date or the suspect’s plea.
