Three people were killed when suspected bandits attacked a vehicle carrying travellers from Sokoto towards Isa on Wednesday, October 21, according to the police.

Sokoto police spokesperson Ahmed Rufai confirmed the deaths of a driver and two other people at Kunawa village in Goronyo Local Government Area, Vanguard reported. He placed the attack on the Marnona–Isa Road.

Daily Trust identified the victims as newly recruited teacher Maniru Sa’adu Imam, driver Abdurrahman Umar and the driver’s five-year-old son, Abubakar Abdurrahman. Their identities were not confirmed in the police account carried by Vanguard.

Daily Trust placed the ambush on the Gundumi–Isa road, rather than the Marnona–Isa route named in the police account.

A witness, Malam Kabiru Isa, told Daily Trust that the victims’ vehicle was travelling behind a security-escorted convoy. He said some vehicles returned to their usual meeting point after the convoy had left, and gunmen later ambushed vehicles behind it.

Isa also said three people were injured and one passenger remained missing. Those figures were not included in the police confirmation reported by Vanguard.

Daily Trust described Imam as a 30-year-old father of one who had been posted to Government Day Secondary School, Maitandu. The witness said he had travelled to Sokoto for salary verification and had not yet received his first pay. He said the deceased were buried on Thursday morning.

The police account did not disclose any arrests or the number of attackers. Daily Trust said its own attempts to reach the police spokesperson for comment were unsuccessful.
