Police in Bayelsa State are investigating the death of a 26-year-old man following a clash between rival youth groups in Diema community, Brass Local Government Area.

The man, identified as Tari and popularly known as Heavyweight, was reportedly attacked with a machete. Punch reported that the confrontation took place on Sunday, October 18.

Bayelsa police spokesperson DSP Musa Mohammed confirmed that normalcy had been restored and said an investigation was underway to establish the circumstances of the clash.

Community sources quoted by Punch and Daily Trust linked the confrontation to an inspection of land reportedly earmarked for a crude oil tank farm. They said youths aligned with rival traditional rulers confronted one another during the visit. Those accounts of the trigger remain allegations under police investigation.

Tari was said to be from Opu-Nembe, also known as Bassambiri, in Nembe Local Government Area. The reports said he was taken to a hospital after the confrontation but was declared dead on arrival.

Punch said no further information about possible arrests had been available when it filed its report.
