Mexico has approved Reno Omokri’s appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador, clearing the host-country approval that had been outstanding after his posting to Mexico City.
His assignment also includes concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, meaning he is to represent Nigeria in those countries as well.
Omokri announced the approval in a post on X. He said José Manuel Briseño Flores, the chargé d’affaires of the Mexican embassy in Abuja, delivered the formal acceptance to the Director of Protocol at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Babagana Wakil.
The approval is the consent a host country gives for another country’s nominated ambassador to serve there.
President Bola Tinubu nominated Omokri in November 2025. The Senate confirmed him in December, and the president approved his posting to Mexico City on March 6, 2026, Punch reported.
In August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Mexico and Japan had yet to communicate acceptance of two outstanding appointments. The ministry said it was engaging the countries and expected the approvals to follow.
Omokri previously served as a media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan.
