A father and his son died when a commercial tricycle caught fire after a collision in Sabon Barki, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Sunday.
The crash happened at about 4:20pm on October 18 along Bukuru Express Road. The family was reportedly returning from church.
Reports differed on the number injured. Punch and Daily Trust reported three injuries, while Premium Times put the figure at seven. Premium Times said a bus, a tricycle and a saloon car were involved; the other two accounts described a collision involving a bus and the tricycle.
The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed that two people died. Its Plateau spokesperson told Punch that the victims were trapped under the vehicle and that the bus driver fled the scene.
Premium Times quoted the FRSC as attributing the crash to speeding and reckless driving. It said the injured were taken to Porter’s Orthopaedic Hospital in Jos and that efforts were underway to trace the bus driver.
Kefas Gyang, a witness who arrived after the collision, said bystanders tried to rescue those inside the burning tricycle but could not overcome the fire. He made clear that he had not seen the vehicles collide.
Gyang said the deceased man’s wife suffered a broken leg. Punch and Daily Trust reported that two other children and the tricycle rider were taken to hospital, while Premium Times referred to one other child and the rider.
The FRSC urged motorists to avoid speeding and reckless driving and advised passengers to caution drivers when they notice dangerous driving.
