The European Union and the United Nations have reviewed a Nigerian project portfolio worth more than $500 million and called for stronger domestic funding and better delivery of development and humanitarian programmes.
EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS Gautier Mignot said the portfolio covered about 32 EU-funded projects involving 16 UN agencies. The figure describes existing projects reviewed by the partners, not a newly announced $500 million grant to Nigeria.
The review took place at the EU–UN Strategic Partnership Dialogue in Abuja. Discussions covered how the organisations could improve coordination, address implementation gaps and align their work with Nigeria’s development priorities.
According to Voice of Nigeria, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Mohammed Fall called for greater engagement by the Nigerian government and more resources raised within the country to address development gaps and humanitarian needs.
Mignot said the partnership brought together EU grants and financial contributions with the UN’s technical and political expertise. He identified education, governance, democracy, human rights and security among its priority areas.
The EU envoy said Nigerian federal and state authorities were also part of the partnership. Their involvement was intended to keep interventions aligned with national priorities and improve the benefits reaching citizens.
No period was specified for the portfolio’s more-than-$500 million valuation. It is not a confirmed annual disbursement.
