The National Policing Bill is 90 per cent ready for transmission to the National Assembly, according to presidential chief of staff Femi Gbajabiamila, with governors’ observations still to be addressed.
Gbajabiamila, who chairs the Presidential Working Group on the bill, said the panel expected to hold one more meeting before completing its work. He spoke after a steering committee meeting at the State House in Abuja on Thursday, October 15.
“The governors have one or two observations, and we should be ready in about a week or so,” he said in a presidential statement reported by Channels Television. He did not give details of those observations.
Gbajabiamila’s estimate concerns the panel’s readiness, not a completed legislative process. Channels Television described transmission as expected within two weeks, while Premium Times framed it as about a week.
The bill is intended to provide practical rules for state policing alongside the separate constitutional amendment. Premium Times reported that the working group had reviewed existing legislation and received public submissions as it developed the framework.
NaijaTrend previously reported the government’s timetable for public input and review of the bill here.
Asked about the pace of state assemblies’ consideration of the constitutional amendment, Gbajabiamila said there was a national consensus on the reform. That was his assessment; the proposed policing framework still awaits transmission to lawmakers.
