The Senate has passed a bill to establish a Federal College of Agriculture in Shani Local Government Area of Borno State.

Senators passed the bill for third reading on Thursday after adopting a recommendation from the Senate Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions. Mohammed Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South, sponsored it.

Ndume said the proposed college would help farmers gain agricultural knowledge and practical skills, adopt modern technology and improve crop varieties. He argued that continued reliance on crude farming methods had constrained productivity and made farm work harder.

He described Shani as an agricultural community known for rice, tomatoes and onions, and pointed to its proximity to farming communities in Adamawa and Bauchi states.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the committee and the sponsor, expressing support for the institution’s proposed role in agricultural development. The bill will now be transmitted to the House of Representatives for concurrence; presidential consideration would follow if the lower chamber approves it.
