The Senate has ordered an investigation into the death of corps member Etimbuk Daniel at the National Youth Service Corps orientation camp in Enugu State, including whether delays in medical care contributed to his death.

The inquiry will also examine medical facilities and emergency response arrangements in NYSC camps nationwide. Senators adopted the resolution on Thursday after a motion of urgent public importance by Aniekan Bassey.

Daniel was a former Students’ Union Government president of Akwa Ibom State University. Bassey told senators that reports of his death raised questions about the availability of qualified medical staff, functional facilities and effective emergency referral systems in orientation camps.

According to Daily Post’s account of the debate, Bassey said Daniel developed complications after a minor headache and allegedly experienced delays in receiving adequate attention at the camp clinic. Those allegations are matters for investigation, rather than established findings about the cause of his death.

The Senate directed its committees handling police affairs, judiciary and human rights, youth development and health to investigate alongside the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services. Punch also listed the committee on ethics, code of conduct and public petitions among those involved.

Mohammed Tahir Monguno seconded the motion. Senators observed a minute of silence for Daniel, while Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the sitting, urged the committees to investigate thoroughly.
